Settlement Workers in Schools

Coming to a new country and school can be scary for students, their parents and school staff. We can help!

SWIS program reaches out to newcomers/immigrant families as they arrive in the school district, and provides them with settlement information and referrals to education and community resources.

What we need from you:

  • Birthdate
  • Passport Information
  • Status in Canada (Permanent Resident Card)
  • School records from previous country
  • Medical records from previous country
  • Arrival date in Canada/Fort St John
  • Canadian address and contact information

Â鶹ÍøÕ¾Áбí SWIS is proud to be a member of the Fort St. John Local Immigration Partnership for the North Peace Region.

SWIS is also pleased to be part of a community partnership with other settlement service providers such as the Fort St. John Public Library, Fort St. John Literacy Society, SUCCESS, and Employment Connections WorkBC. All workshops and programs are free!

Language Training

Programs Include:

  • One to one tutoring in English as a Second Language (ESL) or other subjects as needed
  • Settlement help
  • Group classes, field trips, social events
  • Basic computer skills class
  • ESL conversation circle
  • Literacy workshops

Public Library Services

School Â鶹ÍøÕ¾Áбí #60’s Settlement Workers In Schools program (SWIS) has entered into a partnership with the Fort St. John Public Library to collaborate on the existing Fort St. John Public Library programs.

Programs Include:

  • Summer Program, so as to meet the needs of SWIS students and families throughout July/August non-school months.
  • Spring Break Reading Program,
  • Multicultural Books In Schools
